WASHINGTON, D.C. — On May 29, 2026, the United States Office of Management and Budget issued a proposed rule that would overhaul the way that federal research grants are governed in the U.S., threatening the system that has resulted in countless lifesaving biomedical innovations. In response to the 45-day public comment period that has already attracted nearly 100,000 comments, UAEM submitted a comment expressing strong opposition to the proposed expansion of agency discretion in funding decisions and the proposed expansion of agencies’ grant termination and suspension authorities.

These proposed changes would enable federal agencies to increase political oversight of grant making and to terminate grants at any point if the project no longer aligns with the administration’s priorities, allowing scientific research to be used as a political tool.

Federally funded science has played a key role in delivering health solutions for Americans and globally, and these proposed changes risk the future of biomedical innovation in the United States.
