UAEM updates its Vision, Mission, and Values to unite around the fight for global access to medicines
In the struggle for improving global access to medicines, UAEM has been a meeting point for young activists around the world since its beginnings in 2001. Together, we have raised awareness of persisting health inequities, provided evidence of shortcomings in research and pharmaceutical systems worldwide, and broken down barriers that prevent people from accessing life-saving drugs. While our work is centred around the responsibilities of universities and public research, it never happened in a detached space but in connection with other struggles of health inequity. Over the years, our network and group of supporters has grown, thanks to wonderful allies who partnered up with us and our inspiring alumni who kept supporting our mission in many ways. This powerful community has been and will be the foundation of our activities towards global health equity. As we are stronger together.
As our community and health landscape has evolved, we feel that it is important to reconsider the principles that guide our work today. UAEM’s Vision, Mission, and Values (VMVs) represents the foundation of UAEM’s identity and work as guidance for all our members. They also communicate to partners, supporters, and the wider public, where UAEM stands and what we hold ourselves accountable to.
Over the last couple of months, a working group of our global leadership reviewed and updated these principles. With approval from our membership, we are excited to present UAEM’s new Vision, Mission, and Values.
Vision
We envision a world where quality medicines are affordable, accessible, and available to all. Within that world, public research is transparent, accountable, and driven by the needs of the people. Research and its discoveries funded by the people belong to the people.
Mission
UAEM defends, promotes, and advocates for global access to medicines. By building upon the power of the university community–students, researchers, faculty, alumni, staff, and fellows–UAEM mobilizes action and drives change for health equity.
Values
Independent: Non-partisanship and independence from industry.
Solidarity: Collaboration and collective awareness.
Accountability: Transparency and stewardship.
Equity: Justice, empowerment, and inclusion.
