Private Sector Investment in Research and Development in Canada
Submission to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Science and Research
In response to the Standing Committee’s study on how to best promote and grow private sector investment in research and development in Canada, UAEM’s Canadian Access Team submitted a brief that urges the Canadian government to strengthen the government’s commitment to funding biomedical R&D that addresses public health needs, and ensures access is a priority of the commercialization of innovation.
In the brief, UAEM outlined three key priorities:
1. Strengthen public funding of biomedical R&D, especially to fund neglected health areas and public health priorities.
2. Tie federal funding of biomedical R&D to access conditions.
3. Create federal guidelines for universities on adopting policies to support access to innovation and allocate resources to support those efforts.
